Little Shop of Horrors Music by Allan Menken, Book and Lyrics by Howard Ashman

Stacey Greenawalt, Director
Jess Morris, Music Director

Audition dates: Monday and/or Tuesday, February 9/10, 2026, 6:30 at the theatre
Performance dates: April 11, 12, 17, 18, 19

Told in the musical style of early 1960s rock and roll, doo‐wop and rhythm and blues, a down‐and out skid row floral assistant who becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for fresh blood. Soon “Audrey II” grows into an ill‐tempered, foul‐mouthed, R&B‐singing carnivore who offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite, finally revealing itself to be an alien creature poised for global domination!

Little Shop is one of the longest‐running, award winning, Off‐Broadway shows of all time. It has also enjoyed acclaimed Broadway, national touring and international runs. This affectionate spoof of 1950s sci‐fi movies has become a household name, thanks to a highly successful film version (the musical’s ending is different!). Charming, tuneful and hilarious, with tongue firmly planted in cheek, Little Shop of Horrors never fails to entertain.

How auditions work:

We skip straight to what other theatres do as callbacks. No appointment is necessary. Come to either group audition time and plan to read snippets from the script with other actors. Generally, it's good to audition for any/all roles in a play.

Before you audition

  • Gather a list of ALL schedule conflicts between the audition date and final performance date. This is important. The director will cast the show and create a rehearsal schedule based on provided conflicts. If you (or your child) are cast, it is your obligation to adhere to the rehearsal schedule once it is set.
  • If you have never auditioned with us, and/or if you have a lot of theatre credits, we encourage you to bring a photo headshot and/or theatre résumé with you to auditions. We've put together a basic theatre résumé template in Google Docs that you can copy and use as a guide. This is a generic guide only. A résumé is optional for most directors and does not have to look like this!

Rehearsal Information

  • Specific rehearsal schedules will depend on the people cast, as well as other things that are happening at the theatre.
  • IN GENERAL, we try to rehearse three or four weeknights (often Mon, Tues, & Thurs with occasional Wed or Fri), 6:30-8:30-ish, and Saturday mornings 9:30-noon-ish. But again, there are multiple factors that will affect your rehearsal schedule if cast.
  • Actors are only called to rehearsal when their specific parts are being rehearsed, and directors do their best to work with reasonable schedule conflicts.
  • Information about the first read-through will be given at auditions.
  • If cast, you will receive a rehearsal schedule at (or sometimes before) the first read-through.
  • If you (or your child) are called to rehearsal, the director is counting on your presence unless it was already on your conflict sheet.

More information

The theatre is located at 500 S Bosque (Hwy 22), Whitney, TX, 76692.  It's next door to Whitney Elementary School's athletic fields, directly across from the cemetery. Parking is at the rear of the building. For more info, call the theatre at 254-694-5105.

REHEARSAL SCHEDULE

Casting inevitably relies on availability for rehearsal. Those cast will need to be available for Mon/Tues/Thurs evening and Saturday morning rehearsals, February 14 until the show opens. We reserve the possibility of scheduling a very occasional Wednesday or Friday rehearsal to make up for 3rd Tuesday Board Meeting day.

IN-PERSON AUDITIONS

We will begin each evening of auditions with the vocal portion. All persons auditioning for any but Ensemble roles must be prepared to sing. We will have a bluetooth speaker available, so please have your backing track available on your phone. We would LOVE to hear you sing a song from the show! (Backing track google search)

We will then move on to acting auditions, where all auditioners will use the provided sides. If you are auditioning for Ensemble only, you may arrive at 6:45.

At some point, we will pull candidates for Ronnette, Chiffon, and Crystal to work a short harmonization piece with sheet music.

VIDEO AUDITIONS

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY. We prefer to see you in person, but if you would like to be considered and cannot make either day of auditions, we will accept video auditions for this show. If auditioning via video, your recording must include three parts:

  1. Slate yourself. Please state your name, role(s) for which you are auditioning, your height, your location (city or town), your vocal range if known, and any other pertinent information. This section should be no longer than 30 seconds.
  2. Appropriate monologue from the sides provided, or a short comedic monologue no longer than 60 seconds. Use a New York accent if you're able. (Monologue google search)
  3. You singing a song from the show (or a song that shows your vocal range) filmed with a full-body shot. (Backing track google search)

Please film in horizontal/landscape format.

Edit separate videos together into a single video. There are several great FREE video editors available online, including Canva, CapCut, and others (Free editing tool google search). (Here's a great tutorial on using Canva's new video editor.)

Upload your video to Google Drive, Youtube, Dropbox, or other cloud storage service, adjust permissions if needed to make sure we'll be able to see it, and copy the share link.

Paste the link to your video into our Video Audition form.

Fill out the rest of the form and submit. You'll receive a copy of the email it sends to our team.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS

Seymour Krelborn - Tenor, A2 to G4. Mid 20s to 30s. Lead role. An insecure, put-upon florist's clerk and eventual hero. He is a genuine, well-meaning man who is taken for granted because of his clumsy ways and poor social skills. Grows in confidence as the show progresses. Probable New York accent.

Audrey - Mezzo/Sop, G#3 to belted D5. Mid 20s to 30s. Lead role. Audrey is the secret love of Seymour's life. She has low self-esteem, dresses a little trashy, and attracts the wrong guys. Sweet and vulnerable demeanor. She is in an abusive relationship with Orin Scrivello. Probable New York accent.

Audrey II, (The Plant) - Bari/Tenor, G2 to G4. Age 20-50. The voice is that of a conniving, street-smart 'villain.' A funky Rhythm and Blues voice is best. Female voices will be considered.

Mr. Mushnik - Tenor, G2 to F4. Late 40s to 60s. Supporting role. Seasoned owner of the failing East Side flower shop and Seymour's nosy boss. He is profit-driven, greedy, and manipulative. His accent, if he has one, is middle class New York Jewish.

Orin Scrivello - Bari/Tenor, G2 to G4. Late 20s to early 40s. Supporting role. An egotistical pretty-boy dentist with a passion for leather and sadistic tendencies. Audrey's abusive boyfriend, who is targeted by Seymour.

Crystal, Ronnette, Chiffon - Mezzo/Sop, Ab3 to F5. Late teens to early 30s. Supporting roles. Three female street urchins, acting as the occasional Greek Chorus. Young, hip, and smart, these girls are the only ones who have a grip on reality. Must harmonize well. Probable New York accent.

Ensemble (four or five people) - These will appear in two or three musical numbers (Little Shop of Horrors, Downtown/Skid Row, Don't Feed the Plants), some incidents of non-speaking stage business, scene changes, and may portray the bit speaking roles of Customer, Radio Announcer, Mr. Bernstein, Mrs. Luce, Skip Snip, and Patrick Martin.

DIRECTOR THOUGHTS

Don't let self-doubt about your singing ability prevent you from auditioning. Only the Ronnette/Crystal/Chiffon trio have to be terrific singers. All other voices can have imperfect 'character'.
